We are honored to be recognized as a Smart Business Magazine Business Longevity Award recipient. The Business Longevity Awards recognizes Northeast Ohio organizations with at least 50 years in business that demonstrate their ability to adapt and evolve with changing times. In honor of the award ceremony today, we would love to share some of our favorite highlights from Buckeye Fasteners past and present.
Our Roots
Buckeye Fasteners Company, originally “The Ohio Nut & Bolt Co.” started as a bicycle chain manufacturer in 1905, then moved into the manufacturing of weld screws in 1926. One of our first major weld fastener customers was the Ford Motor Company, who used Buckeye’s weld screws on the frame of the Model A to provide easier assembly of the fenders. Our company was instrumental in the expansion of weld screws and weld nuts in the 1930’s and was recognized by the US War Department for our important “ahead of schedule” production during WW II.
Employee Owned and Proud
In 1979, company owners Rod Whelan and Jean Doheny decided to sell our company. Our then treasurer Richard Biernacki, encouraged our employees to invest in Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP’S) to acquire the company. Our employees took the risk as ESOPs were fairly new at the time. The transaction closed on June 30, 1980 making Buckeye Fasteners a 100% Employee Owned Company and one of the first ESOP companies in Ohio.
Our employee ownership is an instrumental part of our culture and success. We are proud to have been featured in Smart Business Magazine and SME Advanced Manufacturing, as a company who does employee ownership right.

What started as a bicycle manufacturer has become so much more. Buckeye Fasteners continues to look toward the future and our team of engineers develops custom manufactured solutions to the most complex manufacturing challenges.
